Threads: Spilling the Tee

5th March 2025 / Museum blog

In the next in our series of blogs as part of our ‘threads’ year dedicated to clothing, memory and identity, we have asked our Young Curators Group to explore the most ordinary pieces of clothing, the t-shirt. Here Delta and Amelie discuss how there may be more to the t-shirt than we first imagine:

T-shirts have truly stood the test of time when it comes to items of clothing, haven’t they. From their humble beginnings as a basic undergarment, they’ve evolved into a major statement of personal style and expression. In fact, they’re probably one of the most versatile and universally loved pieces of clothing around the world. Whether you’re dressing casually for a day at the park or using it to show off your favourite band, t-shirts have become so much more than just something to wear—they’ve become a canvas for self-expression.

One of the most interesting aspects of t-shirts is how they allow us to share our thoughts and emotions without saying a word. They’re like a silent conversation starter. Think about it: a vibrant, bold colour can give off a vibe of optimism or excitement, while a deep black might suggest something more serious, maybe even a hint of sorrow or introspection. It’s almost like the colour is a mood ring, letting people around you know how you feel at a glance.

And it doesn’t stop with just the colour. The designs we choose to wear on our t-shirts are just as telling. Whether it’s a quirky graphic, a powerful slogan, or an image that resonates with us, these designs often reflect who we are, our beliefs, and our passions. The history of the t-shirt is rich with political statements, pop culture references, and even personal milestones that have been immortalised on fabric. Think about all the iconic band tees, movie quotes, or even activist logos you’ve seen throughout the years.

Speaking of events, one thing we’ve always found fascinating is how people often grab a t-shirt when they attend a concert, a charity event, or a special gathering. These t-shirts aren’t just clothing; they become souvenirs that carry sentimental value. They’re like little pieces of the past that we can wear, keeping memories alive long after the event is over. Maybe it’s a concert tee from that epic show you saw last summer, or a charity shirt you picked up at a fundraising event you felt strongly about. These tees aren’t just about fashion—they’re about moments in time.

In the end, t-shirts are more than just clothes. They’re a reflection of who we are, what we stand for, and the experiences that shape us. So next time you slip into your favourite tee, take a moment to think about what it says about you. You might just be surprised at how much it reveals.

The museum’s Young Curators Group is made up of students from local schools, including those on the Duke of Edinburgh program, who help plan and develop activities at the museum throughout the year. This year they are working on the ‘Spilling the tee’ project, resulting in a pop-up display and children’s activities in May. As part of the project, we would love to know if you have t-shirts, that we could use in our display. Drop us an email at heritage@chippenham.gov.uk, if you would like to be involved.
