Since 2020, extensive investment in the towns’ public space surveillance cameras has been carried out. Advancements in technology has enabled sites to be covered at John Coles Park, Stanley Park and internally at the Town Hall and the Museum as part of the project.
The aim of using CCTV is to ensure areas of Chippenham are safe for the general public, acting as a deterrent to criminal and anti-social behaviour, and providing recorded surveillance and evidence for court proceedings. The cameras have supported Police investigating serious offences by facilitating same-day viewing, the footage identified further witnesses, and on each occasion led to arrests made within 24 hours of the offences.
Following a spate of bicycle thefts from the Town Bridge, an additional camera dedicated to bike racks was installed. The new camera detected two offences within two weeks of being installed; the evidence of which had led to prosecutions.
CCTV Cameras
Chippenham Town Council maintains an extensive network of CCTV cameras across the town. Volunteers working alongside the CCTV Supervisor regularly monitor live stream images with the aim of preventing, deterring and detecting crime and anti-social behaviour.
In addition, they actively monitor public spaces to identify vulnerable persons who may be in need of assistance helping to make Chippenham a safer place to visit, work, shop and live. Hundreds of hours of recorded CCTV images support Police investigations and are instrumental in securing convictions in court.
