Merchant Navy Day 2026

On Thursday 3 September, we will be remembering Merchant Navy Veterans by holding a flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall at 10am.

Merchant Navy Day acknowledges the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy, who, in both World Wars, kept our island nation afloat. It also honours the thousands of Merchant Navy Seafarers who continue to keep our country supplied.

The Red Ensign Flag is flown on all Merchant Navy vessels, and raises awareness of our island nation’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy Seafarers.

‘It’s that time of year when I seek your support in marking Merchant Navy Day on Thursday 3rd September by flying the Red Ensign. This year more than ever, our dependence on our nation’s Merchant Navy has been highlighted by the events in the Arabian Gulf and especially the Strait of Hormuz. Whether flying the flag or spreading the word about their tireless work transporting our island nation’s trade, this is an excellent opportunity to show our seafarers and their families how much we all value them.
