400 years after the birth of John Aubrey, Chippenham Museum’s summer exhibition will celebrate the life and work of this extraordinary person.
John Aubrey (1626-1697) was a pioneering historian, scientist, and biographer who was born in the hamlet of Easton Piercy, near Kington St Michael, Wiltshire.
Throughout his life Aubrey was on a quest for knowledge. He grew up in Wiltshire, but his vision was global. What he saw in the local countryside, its people and places, he expanded to a wider interconnected view of the world. From the ancient monuments of prehistoric people to contemporary ballads sung in the streets, there was nothing that escaped his notice.
Included in the exhibition will be stories recorded by Aubrey that still resonate today, such as biodiversity loss and deforestation. Aubrey was also open to consulting and collaborating with a wide range of people. Who they were or where they were from didn’t matter, instead, he proudly credited and celebrated the knowledge and experiences they had.
Aubrey’s insatiable thirst for knowledge left an amazing legacy. The exhibition will feature significant loans from across the country, bringing original manuscripts, paintings and books from Aubrey’s collection back to Wiltshire for the first time since his death in 1697.
