VE Day 80 Celebration

16th April 2025 / News archive

On Thursday 8 May, we held a flag raising ceremony at the Town Hall Steps to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. On this day in 1945 the Allied countries of Europe accepted the unconditional surrender of Germany, bringing an end to war in Europe.

Mayor Conor Melvin welcomed attendees, before the Union Flag was raised from the Town Hall. Mayoral Cadet Flood and members of the town’s Youth Council read out the names of those from Chippenham who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWII. Chippenham Royal British Legion then led an Act of Remembrance, and the Remembrance Buglers played the Last Post before a two minute silence was observed.

Thanks to all the members of the public who attended, as well as our guests Sarah Gibson MP, HM Lord-Lieutenant Dame Sarah Troughton, High Sheriff of Wiltshire Mr Martin Nye, Chippenham Royal British Legion, representatives from 9 Regiment RLC, Chippenham Armed Forces Breakfast Club, Chippenham Police, the Remembrance Buglers and Wiltshire councillors.
