Joy of Community Jubilee Bunting

25th February 2022 / Museum, News, News-HP

Take part in this project by Chippenham Museum and their Crafty Café

We think bunting is a key part of any royal celebration, so we are asking for your help to provide a very special decoration.

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne. Communities across the country are being encouraged to come together to celebrate this historic milestone. Therefore, we are asking you to join us to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee and the joy of Chippenham as a community by creating an individual piece of art or craft on a triangular flag (tammy) that represents community to you.

The flags will be strung together to create the most extraordinary and unique bunting!

Submit your flags by the end of April to take part.

What does Community mean to you?

You may want to make a flag which represents Chippenham, but community can mean more than where you live. You may be part of a smaller community within your estate, street or school. You may also have a sense of belonging to a group related to your hobby or interest. You can draw on any of these as well as Chippenham as a whole.

Putting your skills into action

We would like the flags to be of uniform size (see below for details) but you can use any media to create them: knitting, crochet, drawing or painting on paper, sewing or embroidery on fabric, or even wood or metal! You can be literal or abstract, but we do ask that you accompany your work with a sentence to say how it represents community to you. We are asking for completed flags to be handed into the museum before the end of April, together with your name and accompanying sentence.

Making instructions

To ensure you make the correct size, follow these instructions or collect a template from Chippenham Museum.

triangle with dimensions

On an A3 sheet and starting 1cm below the top edge draw a line 27cm long. From the centre point of your line measure down at right angles for 32cm. Create a   triangle by joining this point to the end points of your original line. The 1 cm at the top is for us to use to mount the work so cut out the triangle to include it. If you are sewing you will need to add a seam allowance

A royal display

Your flag will be joined with others and the completed bunting will be displayed over the jubilee weekend celebrating our community at the point we celebrate 70 years of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
