Low Carbon Transport

As part of our Climate Strategy and Action Plan, we want to encourage the transition to low carbon travel including walking, cycling, public transport, car share schemes and electric vehicles.

As well as reducing emissions and air pollution from fossil fuel vehicles, Public Health England advises that investment in more walking and cycling infrastructure creates low-cost high impact benefits for personal health, the NHS, the transport system and the economy.

Travel options

Connecting Wiltshire has a journey planner that displays train, bus, car, cycle and walking options as well as the estimated amount of travel emissions generated. EV public charging stations can be found by clicking on this link – EV public charging stations.

Another option is car sharing, when two or more people share a car and travel together. This can cut fuel bills in half whilst reducing congestion and air pollution. Car Share Wiltshire is open to everyone and supported by Wiltshire Council. Organisations can choose to set up their own private group for their staff only.

Some communities have set up their own Car Club which is a flexible way to get access to a car without the costs or stress of ownership. Existing clubs and how to create a car club with friends can be found by clicking this link – Car Clubs.

Community transport includes the Chippenham Link that connects to Chippenham Without, Langley Burrell, Sutton Benger and Tytherton. The Village Link scheme connects Chippenham to surrounding villages including Castle Combe, and Kington St Michael.

The National Cycle route 403 provides a designated cycle path to Marlborough, Avebury, Calne, Lacock and Melksham.
