Friday & Saturday Street Market

There has been a weekly market in Chippenham since King John first granted a charter to hold one in April 1205.

Later King Edward extended the privilege in 1314 so that an additional market could be held on a Saturday.

These historic twice-weekly markets are now held on Friday and Saturday, which from 2019, came back to Chippenham Town Council to manage.

Casual and permanent pitches are available. Do you have a hobby and would like to sell your work? You don’t have to trade both days if you prefer only one. Are you an artisan maker or producer on a small scale and want to test the market? Come and give Chippenham a try.

Market trading times:

8:30am – 4pm (or sell out) Friday and Saturday

New traders

If you would like to try trading at Chippenham Market, it can take time to build up regular customers. If you commit to trading with us for 4 consecutive weeks, we will offer you a further 4 consecutive weeks free of charge on your stall fee.

Not for Profit Stall

If you want to have a stall to raise awareness to a campaign:

• Provide your own equipment such as a table and gazebo
• One organisation can have one pitch for free per year
• The pitch needs to be booked at least one week in advance
• You must provide personal liability insurance and abide by our risk assessment
• If there is an intention to fundraise, please discuss with us in advance so we can agree an appropriate activity
• The pitch will be 3m x 3m, without electricity
• No sales to be made

Refer a trader friend

If you are a current market trader at Chippenham Market, and you refer a new trader to us, who will commit to trading at Chippenham Market for 4 consecutive weeks, you will get 4 weeks free of charge on your stall fee.

How much does it cost to trade?

Fridays  £8.20 per metre

Saturdays  £9.40 per metre

Charities £15.50

What do you need to trade?

You will need to have public liability insurance in place. If you are selling food or drink, you will need to have a food hygiene certificate. You will also need a street trader’s license, which we will issue on your successful application.

You will need to provide your own stall structure, whether that’s a table, gazebo, or vehicle.

What kind of stalls are we looking for?

We are looking for new traders, this could include groceries, gifts and household items. We curate the mixture of stalls to ensure that we don’t have two directly competing traders.

We are currently particularly looking for a fruit and veg stall.
