John Coles Park is the jewel in our crown, a beautiful green space in the heart of Chippenham regularly attracting 1,500 people on a sunny, summer weekend.
The park offers a large area of open space and a circular walk through mature trees. It is maintained to its consistent high standard by our Environmental Services team.
The park is open from 8am to dusk spring and summer and from 8am to 4pm from early November to mid-January.
John Coles Park contains over 350 individual trees. From the striking foliage of Copper Beech and the sweet summer smell of Silver Lime in bloom to the towering majesty of veteran Pedunculate Oaks which pre-date the opening of the park in 1923, our trees are a delight to the senses.
John Coles is managed as an amenity park, and the trees within are a mix of native, semi-native and ornamental species, aiming to balance conservation and amenity so that there continue to be trees in the park for many future generations to enjoy.
The Bandstand in John Coles Park hosts a selection of Sunday afternoon concerts which are free to attend. These popular concerts are a firm favourite in the diary and a super reason to make up a picnic and relax with some gentle toe tapping. All concerts run from May – September and start at 3pm until 5pm.
2020 concerts are currently suspended.
The Splashpad is arguably the most popular attraction in the park. It caters for children under 12 and is open from May – September and offers a chance to cool down in the hot weather whilst having heaps of fun.
The Splashpad will remain closed for 2020 due to COVID-19 as the water we use is not chlorinated.
There is a small fenced garden within the park which historically was known as a sensory garden. We have changed this into a community garden and we are working with local community groups and charities to enable gardening sessions to take place.
The courts are available for hire at £4 an hour.
From 1 August 2020, usage of the tennis courts will return to our normal pre-lockdown use.
Please take note of the rules below:
Courts 1 and 2 are for the use of Chippenham Park Tennis Club
Court 3 is for the use of members of the public
