Tuesday 18 and Thursday 20 February
10.30am – 3pm
Yelde Hall, Museum & Library
Join the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, Chippenham Museum and Chippenham Library to celebrate the Chippenham Arm of the Wilts & Berks Canal. This ‘lost canal’ used to finish where the bus station stands today. Become canal champions as you collect stamps on your trail sheet whilst visiting each venue, with a range of free activities to enjoy on Tuesday 18 and Thursday 20 February.
In the Yelde Hall, meet the volunteers of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust to find out about the history of the canal and join in with family friendly activities for all ages.
In the Museum, see a demonstration of traditional weaving (Tuesday only) and find out about the connection between a pocket watch and the canal.
In the Library, discover a new view with a display exploring the site of the bus station when it was the canal wharf. Join one of the library’s free creative writing and illustration activities for ages 7 to 11 which imagines what the wharf was like (Tuesday or Thursday 2pm to 2.45pm, free but booking essential via the library).
Canal Days is a great opportunity to learn about the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust’s ongoing restoration of Pewsham Locks, a remarkable industrial site and natural haven on the footpath between the Pewsham estate and Lacock. Details of how to reach the site and volunteer opportunities to support its restoration will be available at the event.
