Chippenham Museum is reopening to visitors on Monday 17 May with new modern art exhibition Spotlight On. Open Monday to Saturday with free entry, visitors can drop-in 10am to 1pm or book a free timed ticket at 1pm, 2pm or 3pm to enjoy sole use of the museum.
Open until 19 June, ‘Spotlight On: Modern & Contemporary Art from the Collection of Chippenham Museum’ is the second part of the museum’s exhibition series celebrating North Wiltshire’s creativity. View 40 works from the museum’s post-war modern and contemporary art collection. The exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, ceramics and photography; almost all of which are on display for the first time. All 40 works also feature in an accompanying catalogue (£5) available from the museum and its online shop.
Melissa Barnett, Head of Heritage and Museum Services, said “We are thrilled to be welcoming visitors back to share our love of Chippenham. Our Spotlight On exhibition is the perfect exhibition to reopen with: a collection of artworks uniting to represent our local area’s inspiring creative community. We would like to thank the artists for donating their artworks and making the collection possible.”

The museum has been awarded Visit England Good To Go status, with a detailed plan to ensure visitor safety in line with government guidance including enhanced cleaning, test and trace recording and use of face coverings.
Melissa continued “Across the country many have missed the peace and comfort of spending time in museums and galleries. We offered Private Views when we reopened last year, which were popular with families and those who felt more at ease with sole use of the museum. We’re pleased to be offering Private Views again in the afternoons alongside the ability to drop-in in the mornings.”
Alongside the exhibition, visitors to John Coles Park and Monkton Park can spot ten images of the exhibition’s artworks on trees with trail Art Outdoors. Scan the trail’s QR codes for information about the artists and trees while enjoying Chippenham Town Council’s green spaces. This trail has been sponsored by The Kington Langley Arts Society. The museum has also launched a blogs series introducing thirteen of the artists featured in the exhibition.
‘Spotlight On: Modern & Contemporary Art from the Collection of Chippenham Museum’ is open from 17 May to 19 June. Chippenham Museum is a free entry Chippenham Town Council facility. The museum looks after and shares the town’s collection of 35,000 objects with events, family activities and changing art and historical exhibitions.
