Avebury
Perhaps not Britain's best known stone circle, but the largest
in Europe. Avebury formed the centre of one of the most impressive
Neolithic ceremonial landscapes in Britain. Visit Avebury Manor
built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Alexander Keiller
Museum offering an insight into the archaeology of Avebury and the
surrounding monuments, The Great Barn, Dovecote and St. James'
Church which dates back to before the Norman Conquest.
The village boasts a National Trust Shop, The Henge
Shop, Post Office and store and café. Why stop for a drink at The
Red Lion complete with thatched roof, old beams and large fireplace
situated in the heart of the stone circle.
West Kennet Long Barrow is one of the largest Neolithic burial
tombs in Britain and constructed about 3700BC. The Barrow is
reached by a footpath _ mile from the A4 at West Kennet.
