Thrill-seekers are invited to take part in the second annual Soap Box Derby brought to you by Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council.

Hosted by Chippenham’s very own Super Mario, the mad dash will take place on Sunday 3rd June from 12-4pm throughout the High Street, where hand-made, non-power assisted karts will manoeuvre the course past crowds of spectators and businesses complete with obstacles and ramps!

Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said: “Last year’s inaugural Soap Box Derby was hugely popular, and we’re excited to be working on this year’s event. We’ll be joined by local groups, including a special opening performance from Dancing Academy. This is a chance for friends, organisations, clubs and business teams to show off their creativity as well as their speed, with a range of prizes up for grabs covering more than just the fastest kart.”

Councillor Sandie Webb, Leader of Chippenham Town Council said: ”The varied designs of the hand-made carts last year showed that there is no limit to the ingenuity of the competitors.  It was both a competitive and enjoyable event that attracted families, businesses, local groups and residents, and we look forward to more of the same this year.”

56 drivers and 28 teams competed in 2017 with the hope of winning one of five coveted trophies and over 6,000 spectators visited the town across the day soaking up the atmosphere. Trophies include Fastest Time and Best Business Soap Box and for 2018 a new trophy will be introduced for Best Youth Team Soap Box.

Entry is in advance only. There will be 2 classes: senior class drivers 14 years+ and junior class 8-13 years. Each hand-made kart will adhere to certain rules and regulations, comprising of a non-motorised vehicle, which will be launched with a running push start by the team and steered by the team’s driver. Kart inspection is from 10am in the Market Place with races beginning promptly at 12noon.
