Georgian Family Workshops

Weird and Wonderful Wigs – Tuesday 31 July & Thursday 2 August
Make a paper wig inspired by the fantastical designs worn by 18th century men and women

Balloon Mania – Tuesday 7 August & Thursday 9 August
The Georgians were crazy about hot air balloons, have a go at making your own model balloon

Wacky Weaving Workshop – Tuesday 14 August & Thursday 16 August
Try your hand at weaving, Chippenham’s main industry in the Georgian period

Magnificent Masks – Tuesday 21 August & Thursday 23 August
Have a go at making your own magnificent mask fit for a glorious Georgian ball

Brilliant Builders – Tuesday 28 August & Thursday 30 August
Became an 18th century architect and build your own Georgian inspired structures

Music and Art:

Summer art exhibition

Monday 16 to Saturday 28 July – free entry, Yelde Hall
Annual summer art exhibition by Chippenham and District Artists, with works inspired by the Georgian period

Provincial English Music of the 18th century

Saturday 15 September – 12.30pm, £10, Town Hall
Lunchtime performance by the Avon Ensemble, featuring music by 18th century Chippenham composer, J.M. Coombes

Walks and Talks:

Building Georgian Chippenham

Thursday 2 August – 7pm, £4, Neeld Hall
An informative talk by Mike Stone on the architecture of 18th century Chippenham
Organised by Chippenham Civic Society

Chippenham Affray

Wednesday 15 August – 2pm, £4
Join our walking tour of Georgian Chippenham, following the route of the infamous 1822 Chippenham Affray

Dressing Mr. and Mrs Andrews

Saturday 8 September – 11am-3pm, free entry
A live demonstration of 18th century costume, inspired by the famous Gainsborough painting
Organised by the Friends of Chippenham Museum



Regular Activities

Town Centre Walk: Chippenham People & Places

Wednesday 1, 8, 22 & 29 August
2pm – 3pm, meet at Chippenham Museum, £4 booking recommended

Discover the people, places and buildings of Chippenham’s past with this guided walk. With four opportunities to enjoy over the summer, this walk is perfect for both visitors to the town and residents who wish to know more about where they live.

Discovery Time

Every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays), 10.15am-12.00noon, at the museum

Messy play for under 5s. Develop their creative side with crafts, paints, toys, sandpit, storybooks and more!

Discovery Time will be returning on Monday 14th May after taking a break whilst building work took place at the museum. Please note buggy space is limited, if you don’t need to bring your buggy it will be much appreciated.


First Saturday of the month, 10.30am-12pm

£4 per child, no booking necessary

Chippenham Museum’s monthly session for accompanied children aged 6 – 11 where you can explore history, get creative and discover new stories.
