Museum & Heritage Centre

Welcome to Chippenham Museum & Heritage Centre. We are an active and friendly community museum situated in the heart of this busy Wiltshire market town. You will see from our web pages that we always have something going on and the links will take you to our What's On pages and our Current Exhibitions. All our activities are updated regularly on our facebook and twitter pages.

The museum is located in a beautiful Grade II listed Georgian building in the Market Place. With a façade reputedly by John Wood the Younger, the building was once the home of the town’s MP.  It is connected to a pub that moved, a woollen entrepreneur, the King of England and Viking raiders!

Once inside the museum you can come on a 3D panoramic tour of our galleries to see what we have on display. Our collections are being developed and you can see the highlights in our  Curators Choice and Collection Highlights.

Many of our activities and temporary exhibitions are held in the town’s most iconic building, the Grade I listed medieval Yelde Hall. Explore the link for details on the history of Yelde Hall, such as how it got its strange name and why there were pirates in Chippenham! Please contact us if you are interested in booking the Yelde Hall for an exhibition or event

We have a thriving and very busy Learning and Outreach team.  We work closely with all the town and local village primary schools exploring our history together. We also provide regular community learning opportunities with holiday activities and weekly family activity sessions. Our education room is available for private bookings.

Discover more about the amazing history and heritage of the town and local area. Did you know for instance that Chippenham was the site of a battle in the English Civil War? We have connections with the Romans, Brunel, Maud Heath but most importantly King Alfred the Great. It has been said that it was at Chippenham where the history of England began!

Although we have a busy and large volunteer team, we are always looking out for more people to come and help us. There are opportunities as a both front-of-house and behind-the-scenes wardens.

We also have a very active and enthusiastic Friends Group.
