Could you be Town Crier for Chippenham?

24th January 2018 / News archive

Chippenham Town Council is seeking an Honorary Town Crier to promote the town of Chippenham.

The position of Town Crier will be a self-employed role; however there will be an honorarium (£200 per year) from Chippenham Town Council to ensure the selected Town Crier attends all Civic Events, as well as joining the Ancient & Honorary Guild of Town Criers. Full robes will be provided.

The successful applicant will be expected to have, and to develop, a good local knowledge with an understanding of the town and its history, to answer queries by visitors to help locate cafes, toilets, local attractions etc. It is hoped they will be able to make easy conversation with anyone seeking assistance during their duties. The cries must be in good taste and in the spirit of the role.

The appointee represents Chippenham and its residents so they are expected to maintain a high standard of appropriate behaviour and courtesy at all times during their duties, and at competitions.

Invitations to perform commercial cries for local businesses in the area e.g. opening of stores etc. are both encouraged and allowed, subject to approval from the Chief Executive or their nominated representative.
