High Steet closure trial

30th August 2016 / News archive

In May of this year we conducted a consultation exercise to gauge opinions amongst businesses and residents on a proposal to close the High Street to traffic on a Friday from 6.30am to 7.30pm.

The High Street currently closes to traffic at 9.30am on Fridays but safety concerns have been raised about traffic using the road while the weekly general market is setting up.
The town’s retailers, business community and residents have been consulted and The Town Council has decided to submit a formal application for a Temporary Road Closure to close the High Street to vehicular traffic from the earlier time of 6.30am and for a trial period of three months. During this trial period the Town Council will consider whether to make a further application for a longer period of road closure, up to a maximum of two years duration.

It is anticipated that the above road will be closed to all vehicular traffic (save in all cases of emergency) between the hours of 6.30am and 7.30pm (please note: there is already a Traffic Order in place closing this section of the High Street to all vehicular traffic between 9.30am and 7.30pm) from 13th January 2017 to 12th April 2017 i.e. a three month trial period.

If you would like to make a formal objection you need to do this by 18 November 2016. Please contact:
