High St closure consultation

5th May 2016 / News archive

We’re asking for your views on whether Chippenham High Street should close to traffic earlier on Friday mornings.

The High Street currently closes at 9.30am but a suggestion has been made that it should close at 6.30am to ensure the weekly general market can set up safely.

Cllr Peter Hutton, chairman of the planning, environment and transport committee, said:  “We want to hear what people think before any decision is made. The aim of the consultation is to get meaningful feedback on why people think this is a good or bad idea with reasons to back up their views. That will enable us to make an informed decision.

“We’re aware people use the High Street to cross from one side of Chippenham to the other. Friday is a work and school day so it’s important we have an accurate picture and clear information on what impact, if any, this could have on cross town traffic. We certainly don’t want to do anything that would cause traffic problems in our town.”

The potential impact on peak time cross town traffic will be investigated to determine whether the closure could lead to traffic congestion.

The town’s retailers and business community are being consulted and we want your views too. You can email your comments to us at enquiries@chippenham.gov.uk or send by post to the Town Hall. The closing date is June 10 2016.

Formal comments can also be sent to Wiltshire Council’s traffic orders team by post to Traffic orders team, Sustainable transport group, Wiltshire Council, Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, BA14 8JN.
