“Little Bath – Gossip and Scandal in Georgian Chippenham”

Chippenham Museum’s latest temporary exhibition, open 14 July to 29 September with free entry, explores the highs and lows of life in Georgian Chippenham and features objects on loan from the British Museum.

As its nickname suggests Chippenham was a miniature version of its larger more famous neighbour. Its streets were lined with elegant Georgian townhouses, fashionable stores sold the latest wares and concerts, plays and assemblies were held in the town. Chippenham even had its own Spa, where visitors could take the waters at the town’s very own Pump Room in St. Mary Street. Yet behind its genteel façade, Georgian Chippenham was a hotbed of gossip and scandal.

This exhibition forms part of Chippenham Museum’s Georgian Season of events with a range of walks, talks and family workshops throughout the summer. The season starts with a Glorious Georgian Day at the museum on Saturday 14 July, a day of fun and frivolity with costumed interpreters the ‘Mannered Mob’. For the full programme of Georgian events visit Chippenham Museum’s website and social media pages.

Museum Curator Melissa Barnett said “Georgian Chippenham was a fabulous and vibrant place to be and we hope you will be surprised by what you will discover during our Georgian season. We are particularly delighted to have on loan some rather risqué satirical prints from the British Museum”

Cllr Teresa Hutton, Chair of the Amenities, Culture and Leisure Committee at Chippenham Town Council said “The museum has developed and improved its facilities over the last few months and we are delighted that the town now has a new gallery space to show off its wonderful history and culture. Do visit the museum’s latest exhibition and why not also explore the new bright airy museum shop”

Chippenham Museum, a Chippenham Town Council facility, is free to visit and open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. The museum tells the story of the people and history of Chippenham and surrounding villages from prehistoric times up until the present day, with family activities such as dressing up and museum trails and two floors of galleries to explore.
