Development works at Chippenham Museum

Development works to take place at Chippenham Museum

Chippenham Museum is creating a new temporary exhibition space, supported using public funding by Arts Council England. This space will allow the museum to put on bigger and better exhibitions. The flexible space will be available for community use and will also allow the museum to offer a more varied outreach programme.

The funding will allow the museum to update its security to Government indemnity standards and to purchase new display cases to show our collections. For the first time this will allow the museum to borrow amazing objects from National Museums such as the British Museum and the V&A. This will mean we can tell more of the fascinating stories that make Chippenham and surrounding villages so special.

The first exhibition in the new space will open in November. It will be a celebration of local creativity; dedicated to the many artists and craftspeople that have lived and worked in the area. Alongside works by well-known artists such as Howard Hodgkin and Robin Tanner will be displayed examples of pottery and silver produced in the local area.

The gallery improvements will be the first stage in the development of the ground floor which will include a new museum shop and entrance onto the Market Place.  The wider project will also showcase some of the fine architectural features of the Georgian town house that is home to the museum.

The museum will remain open to the public while these changes take place. There will be lots of activities to enjoy in other parts of the museum and we will try to keep disruption to a minimum as much as possible.

To keep up to date with the progress of this project contact the museum on or follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

Leader of Chippenham Town Council, Cllr Sandie Webb says “These development works are a crucial element for the future progression of the museum as it will enable more exhibition opportunities of work from national institutions”

Chippenham Museum Curator, Melissa Barnett says “The award from Arts Council England will enable to museum to bring new and exciting exhibitions and displays to Chippenham. It will allow us to show objects and material connected to Chippenham which are stored in National Museums and to bring their story back to the town. With the shop development and new entrance also planned we hope to encourage more people to visit and enjoy our town museum and what it has to offer”
