Chippenham’s SOAP BOX DERBY: Sunday 25 June 2017
It has bowled over competitors in Brussels, attracted amateurs in Australia and livened up the streets of London – yet for the first time in Chippenham’s history, we’ll be welcoming our very own FREE Soap Box Derby to the heart of the town… in true Chippenham style on Sunday 25 June from 11-4pm.
Brought to you by Chippenham Connected and Chippenham Town Council, the event will be hosted by our very own Super Mario and Dastardly BID Manager, Simon Philpott.
Simon Philpott said:
“A Soap Box Derby in little Chippenham? Yes indeed! Out of all the fantastic events we are hosting this year I think this is my favourite, why? Because it brings together businesses, schools, the public, the whole community for something that is both fun and competitive!”
Richard Williams, Wiltshire Council’s Locality Youth Facilitator for Chippenham, Corsham and Malmesbury Community Areas, said:
“It is truly fantastic to see Chippenham Connected bridging the gap between the youth of the town and local businesses; engaging them with such a fun project and overall event. This is something new and exciting for Chippenham and on behalf of the Local Youth Network, we are excited to be a part of it!”
The Soapbox Derby will trial non-power assisted karts through the outlined course starting at the bottom of the Market Place, with competitors navigating through the High Street past crowds of spectators and businesses and finishes at The Bridge to win a range of coveted titles and trophies.
Each hand-made kart will adhere to certain rules and regulations set out by our event experts, comprising of a non-motorised vehicle, which will be launched with a running push start by a team member and steered by the team’s driver. The run will be timed by our event marshals to determine our leader board and ultimate winners. All of the guidelines, as well as the all-important application forms, can be downloaded from our website: www.chippenhamconnected.com/whats-on/soap-box-derby.aspx or collected from Chippenham Town Council.
The judges will not only be assessing the speed of your spectacular soap box – they’ll also be checking boxes on the creative criteria front PLUS your showmanship on the day, so we think this could be a fabulous opportunity for some teambuilding and bonding along the way.
Teams are limited to 4 per kart. There will be 2 classes: senior class drivers 14 years and over and junior class 8-13 years.
Entry is in advance only. Kart inspection is from 9.30am-10:30am in the Market Place. All teams must be registered and their karts inspected during that time. Races begin at 11:30am.
This is the perfect occasion for Wiltshire’s liveliest market town to come together and a chance for residents, students, businesses and visitors alike to channel their creativity to concoct the wackiest, weirdest, wildest and most wonderful homemade soapbox vehicles to complete a course throughout our town centre.
Naturally, the end goal is to clamber up the leader board…yet, we think it’s a great opportunity to channel some good, competitive fun. Good luck!
Registration packs are available from our customer services reception at the Town Hall. Don’t delay, entries close on 9 June.
