Volunteering at Chippenham Museum

Chippenham Museum Volunteers

Our volunteers are the backbone of our museum. The work they do ranges from meeting and greeting our visitors to getting involved with looking after the collections.

The frequency of volunteering with the museum can vary to suit individual needs, ranging from taking part in occasional activities to volunteering for a couple of hours every week. For example, many of our front of house volunteers join us for 3 hours every fortnight.

To apply as a volunteer, please click here to download and complete our Volunteer Application Form.

Paper copies are also available from the museum. Forms can be returned in person or emailed to heritage@chippenham.gov.uk.

Additional to specific opportunities listed below, we are always happy to discuss your individual interests and ways in which you may like to volunteer within the team. Please visit the museum, call 01249 705020 or email heritage@chippenham.gov.uk if you would like to discuss anything relating to volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Opportunity: Welcome Volunteers

Share your passion for the local area in this visitor facing role at Chippenham Museum and the Yelde Hall.

Housed in an 18th century townhouse, Chippenham Museum tells the fascinating story of this historic market town from its prehistoric origins to the present day. Visitors can learn about the town’s development, through its connections to river, road and rail and explore its surprising links to Alfred the Great and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The Yelde Hall is free to visit and one of Chippenham’s most iconic buildings. It is one of few remaining timber buildings in the town and was built in the mid-15th century as the town’s meeting place. Since then the building has served a variety of purposes such as a site for local government and as the town fire station.

This role will include:

  • Creating a friendly welcome
  • Answering questions where possible about the museum and local area
  • Keeping a tally of visitors and cash handling

We currently have opportunities at several times during the week, with volunteers usually joining us for three hours every fortnight. We also welcome volunteers who are able to join us on a more ad-hoc basis at varying dates and times.

What we are looking for:
This role would suit those with a friendly and approachable manner who would enjoy helping both visitors and residents learn something new about Chippenham.

This role would be of interest to those who are seeking to gain further experience in public facing positions. Equally those seeking to gain experience of working in the heritage sector would be an asset to the team.

What we can offer:

The benefits of volunteering with Chippenham Museum at the Yelde Hall include:

  • Improving your understanding of the heritage of the local area
  • Making a difference to visitors’ experience of the local area
  • Meeting new people as part of the Chippenham Museum volunteer team
  • Developing communication skills
  • Increasing cash handling experience
  • Opportunities to assist with other volunteering roles and projects
  • Free parking when volunteering

We hold summer and Christmas parties to thank our volunteers for their support and all volunteers can enjoy a free annual trip with the museum. In 2017 we visited The Museum of English Rural Life in Reading and Aldbourne village and Heritage Centre.
